Halo Infinite’s second Winter Contingency Event is here, and 343 Industries has made improvements to the way they handle limited-time events.
Halo Infinite’s second limited-time event, “Winter Contingency,” has kicked off and runs from December 21st, 2021, through January 3rd, 2022. The Winter Contingency is a Christmas-themed event that offers 10-levels of cosmetic unlocks. Following player outrage with Halo Infinite’s previous “Fractures: Tenrai event,” 343 Industries has made changes to the way they approach limited-time modes in the future, one of those changes being much more free armor and weapon unlocks. Leveling up any event pass should earn players at least one cosmetic unlock from now on.
While the Fracture: Tenrai event also brought the Fiesta game mode for a limited time, the Winter Contingency event does not have any special modes for players to dive into. Game modes that were likely to be event-based only in the future, like Tactical Slayer (Swat), Team Slayer & Fiesta, have thankfully been added to the game permanently after much player backlash. Future limited-time modes/events will likely have variations of Halo Infinite’s Tactical Slayer, Team Slayer & Fiesta modes, as well as other new modes to play.
Along with classic game modes like slayer being added to Halo Infinite permanently, 343i has also made weekly and event challenges easier to complete. The Winter Contingency doesn’t have any actual gameplay challenges at all. To unlock this event’s ten cosmetics, players have to play one game a day for 10 out of the events 13 days. Unlike the previous Fracture: Tenrai event, the Winter Contingency only returns one time per year, giving players only a brief time frame to unlock everything in the event. Also, unlike the Tenrai event, all of the cosmetics unlocks are free and cannot be bought using Halo Infinite‘s store credits.

Here’s what players will unlock for each of their ten days played this event:
- Day 1: Wild Justice nameplate
- Day 2: Peppermint Laughter armor coating
- Day 3: UA/Tatius shoulder left-pad
- Day 4: UA/Tatius shoulder right-pad
- Day 5: Peppermint Laughter MA40 Assault Rifle weapon coating
- Day 6: Snowmageddon backdrop
- Day 7: Navlogcom nameplat
- Day 8: Peppermint Laughter MK50 Sidekick weapon coating
- Day 9: Myesel ammo pouch
- Day 10: Sunset Contessa armor coating
While getting the chance to play Halo Infinite for 10 out of the events 13 days may be difficult for some players to complete during the holidays, 343i has undoubtedly shown they are taking a step in the right direction with limited-time events unlocks. Halo Infinite’s Tenrai event left little to be desired in its first appearance but has gotten a significant overhaul since then and will include most of the items locked behind a paywall in its free pass when it reappears on January 4th.
Halo Infinite is available for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
